WRITING ON WATER 2 Wednesdays - Writer Workshop for Middle & High School ELA Teachers November 30 and December 7 from 4:00-5:30, 3 STEM Clock Hours via WWU Grades 6-12 Teachers and top student writers team up to explore writing, reading, and speaking on local water systems solutions.

About the Event
Writers love writing. Participants in this special, two Wednesday Writer’s Workshop will be immersed in a watershed of creative lesson ideas for reading, writing, and speaking about water systems across genres including nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and spoken word. In this playful practicum we'll turn a literary eye and poetic ear to analyzing, interpreting, and building stories around science and engineering inquiries related to where our drinking water comes from, how our water footprint walks all over the globe, how our wastewater gets treated and pumped back into the water cycle within 24 hours, how polluted stormwater runoff carries the toxins of our urban lives into the bloodstream of salmon and up the food chain to orca, and how summer drought and winter flooding caused by a warming climate and our shrinking snowpack will play out this century. Lots to write home about. Wait, this is our home. We will focus on writing about solutions, not doom and gloom, as this century belongs to our students, and we can help them write their way to Green-STEM solutions, equitable outcomes, and a better narrative for their future. Water is life and the water systems we depend on are a critical foundation for sustainable systems thinking.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Green STEM solutions applied to water systems thinking at the local level most relevant to our student’s lives.
- Design, adopt or refine one or more lesson ideas using the water systems resources provided.
- Explore career pathways that help students see the range of job opportunities for communication skills applied to Green-STEM water systems management needs.
